7 Signs That You Need Air Conditioner Repair

Before you know it, warm weather will be back in full swing and your air conditioning unit will be in high demand. The last thing any Las Vegas homeowner wants to deal with on a hot day is the need for an AC repair. As temperatures continue to rise, you want to know that your air conditioner can handle the heat.

With annual maintenance, you are better able keep your AC unit working effectively and efficiently, but if you notice signs that AC repair might be necessary, make sure to act quickly before the problem worsens. Here are seven signs that you might need air conditioner repair.

1) Hot Air Coming Through

The mot obvious indication that your AC isn’t working properly is a lack of cold air coming from the vents, even if you’ve turned the thermostat down. If your air conditioner is blowing out warm air rather than cold, it might be caused by a few different problems such as low refrigerant levels, restricted airflow from clogged filters or obstructed vents, or a broken condenser.

2) Lack Of Airflow

Poor airflow is another obvious sign of a problem. Take a few minutes to walk around your house, checking the airflow coming from each vent. If you only notice weak airflow certain areas, the problem could be a clogged vent or obstructed ductwork, but it could also be the result of a malfunctioning thermostat. If you find insufficient airflow throughout the whole house, it is very likely that your AC unit’s compressor or motor are failing.

3) Frequent Cycles

On particularly hot days, it is both normal and expected for your air conditioner to kick on more often. However, this shouldn’t be the case on a daily basis. If you have noticed that your AC is cycling on constantly, you may need a simple AC tune-up to clean out any accumulations of dirt or debris and ensure that other components are working properly. Frequent cycles could also be a sign that your air conditioner is nearing the end of its lifespan.

4) Feels Humid Inside

Running your air conditioner should not make the house feel humid indoors.  An air conditioner that is functioning properly is programmed to automatically control humidity levels. If you’ve noticed that it feels humid or muggy inside, a repair is needed. It may be as simple as doing a little maintenance or re-calibrating the system, but you may need a dehumidifier as well.

5) Leaks Or Abnormal Amounts Of Moisture

A certain degree of condensation around the air conditioner is to be expected, but if you’ve notice abnormal amounts of moisture or have found a leak, be sure to have that inspected as soon as possible. Pooled water, excessive moisture, or an active leak could be a sign of a clogged condensate drain or a refrigerant leak. Refrigerant can be harmful to health of those living in the home and water leaks can create a risk for water damage or mold growth.

6) Bad Smells

Bad odors should not be coming from your air conditioner when it’s running or when it’s off. If you smell anything foul, pungent, musty, burning or smoky, there is a problem that should be addressed quickly. It could be that the wire insulation has burned out or that mold is growing within the unit or inside the home’s ductwork.

7) Strange Sounds

A properly functioning air conditioner shouldn’t’ be loud or noisy. If you’ve heard grinding, squeaking, banging, or rattling come from your air conditioner, call for professional AC repair for an inspection. It could be something as simple as a loose part, but it could be a sign of a serious problem.
