Then they come, breeze in and breeze out while leaving a perfectly remediated home in their wake. What is their secret?
While they have a number of high powered tools and product that helps them achieve their aim, the deodorization process itself is the most integral part of odor removal service and here is a breakdown of what it really entails.
Deodorization
This can simply be defined as the primary way of removing an unpleasant smell from something or somewhere. There are strategically three ways that professional odor removal service carryout deodorization.
- Sanitization
The process of sanitization entails a thorough cleaning of the affected area. The logic is that during the cleaning operation, the source of the offensive odor can be located and removed thus eliminating the smell as well. The professional then go on to use specialized products and tools to completely eliminate any of the offensive odor that might be left after the source of the odor have been removed.
There are different ways to sanitizing an area or object and this includes physical cleaning, scrubbing and pressure washing, hot water washing or via chemical applications. Care must be taken before using the sanitization strategy as it is limited to only porous surfaces and some certain types of textile.
- Disinfection
Disinfection is a term used loosely to sometimes mean sanitization as well, they, however, aim at achieving different objectives. Disinfection is primarily targeted at eliminating disease-causing pathogens such as viruses and bacteria. The logic, therefore, is that since many of these disease-causing pathogens are microorganisms that can cause an unfavorable smell, disinfection will do the double job of both keeping the environment safe and odor free.

- Modification
This is no doubt the least understood and employed strategy of the three. As the name suggests, the modification strategy doesn’t essentially eliminate the source of the unpleasant smell. It rather works on changing the chemical composition of the molecular structure of the odor itself. In layman’s terms, it changes the bad odor itself to a pleasant or at least bearable smell.
How is this achieved? By means of two separate chemical processes; masking and counteracting.
- Masking: this process essentially means that in order to prevent the homeowner from perceiving the offensive odor, a stronger pleasantly smelling fragrance is released into the affected area.
This is trickier than it sounds and requires the use of special chemical compounds, processes, and tools for the application. It is, however, a more or less temporary solution and professional odor removal service wouldn’t advise its use.
- Counteraction: this process is also referred to as pairing. This is because the process basically entails developing a special chemical compound that would pair with the already existing offensive odor and make them odorless.
The downturn to this process is that while it is a very good way to eliminate smoke odors, it will not effectively eliminate protein based odor like that from pet urine. It also does nothing to remediate the already smoke-affected materials.
For these reasons, it is also not an advisable method to be used in odor removal service.
