Norilsk Nickel’ strategy against environmental damage: environment is under control

Ecological issues are the ones of great importance nowadays and they surely require serious attention. Norilsk Nickel takes care of the environment and implements diverse projects devoted to nature preservation. It mentions that nature preservation is one of its main priorities.

Unfortunately, not all companies understand that it is essential to protect nature and devote time and money to solving various ecological issues. However, on the other side, it is good that some corporations pay attention not only to getting profit but also to help the world.

This article will show how Norilsk Nickel eliminates environmental damage by taking part in different local and international projects. It will also point out how the right actions can contribute to environmental protection.

Norilsk Environment in the Right Hands. Nornickel’s Activities and Measures Taken

As mentioned above, Nornickel is an industrial giant that pays attention to ecological issues and does its utmost in order to protect the environment. The company participates in diverse ecological drafts and takes care of all the spheres. It implements projects for:

  • biodiversity conservation
  • investigation of climate change and global warming issues
  • air protection
  • waste management
  • water protection
  • sea freighting

Norilsk Nickel protects environment on all the levels by taking such measures as:

  • gradual reduction of SO2 emissions by the modernization of the existing equipment and facilities
  • organization of sea freighting in compliance with the national regulations
  • construction of new facilities and systems at plants
  • sustainable use of natural resources
  • conservation of biodiversity on various levels
  • collection of information about greenhouse gases
  • improvement of the environmental management system

The main ecological projects Norilsk Nickel is involved in now are the Sulphur project, the international draft in cooperation with BASF and the great Norilsk expedition. Let us have a closer look and check what the main points of these drafts are.

Norilsk Nickel’s Environment Projects and Their Main Points

The Sulphur project is the key draft Norilsk Nickel has been working on for a long time. The main aim of it is to sufficiently reduce the level of sulphur dioxide emissions in the regions of Nornickel’s operations.

It is essential to eliminate the consequences of industrial production and Norilsk Nickel protects the environment by taking care of the atmosphere. It understands that SO2 emissions are really dangerous especially for sensitive groups of people that is why Nornickel does its utmost in order to minimize the risks.

The first phase of the Sulphur project has already been finished and it has resulted in:

  • the reduction of SO2 emissions by 30% in the Norilsk residential area and by 15% in the Polar Division in general
  • Nadezhda Plant and Talnakh concentrator upgrade and expansion
  • elimination of 600 sources of air pollution
  • shut down of two wastewater discharge points

Norilsk Nickel plans to continue working on this draft and it is estimated that it can cost about $3.5BN. Nornickel is ready to cover all the expenses related as it is vital to reduce sulphur dioxide emissions locally and globally.

The second project that also plays a huge role in the Norilsk environment is the great Norilsk expedition that has been organized by Norilsk Nickel in cooperation with outstanding scientists from 14 RAS institutes. The first stage that was carried out on the field finished and it helped to examine the Taimyr Peninsula.

During this stage, more than 1500 samples of plants, water, sediment and soil were collected and placed to the laboratories where they will be subjected to further examination. It is expected that the laboratory stage will take several months and result in an important report that will provide:

  • the information about changes that have happened in the Arctic region recently
  • the data about the present ecological situation in the region
  • suggestions for industrial companies on how to continue sustainable development without bringing any harm to the environment

This project is really important for the Arctic region and it is unique in its nature.

Moreover, Norilsk Nickel protects the environment on the global level as well. It has joined forces with a huge European corporation, BASF, and these giants plan to implement a project devoted to reducing a carbon footprint. It will help to supply the battery materials markets and lead to the improvement of the ecological situation in the world.

It has already been announced that the first location will be in  Harjavalta, Finland and the new plant there will utilize locally generated renewable energy sources. This is a long-term initiative that will contribute to the development of two industrial giants as well as have a great impact on solving global environmental issues.

All in all, ecological problems play a huge role for humanity nowadays. More and more industrial corporations appear regularly but only a small amount of them take care of environmental issues.

Norilsk Nickel protects the environment on all the levels both globally and locally. It sets nature preservation as one of its main goals and devotes lots of time and money in order to minimize the consequences of industrial production.

Nornickel has a great impact on the Norilsk environment as all the measures that are taken by the leading nickel and palladium producer helped to decrease the level of pollution in the regions of its operations.

Norilsk Nickel eliminates environmental damage and actively participates in diverse ecological projects, organizes various campaigns and cooperates with those who take care of ecology. The main projects Nornickel is involved in now are the Sulphur project, the great Norilsk expedition and the international draft which is led in cooperation with BASF.

Nornickel plans to continue environment protection policy and implement more projects that will help to save nature and contribute to biodiversity conservation.
